Dexter's New Safe Place

Dexter is always on the lookout for a safe place where he can sleep.  He likes to catnap on the changing pad in the boys' room, but he often gets displaced when we need to use it for its intended purpose.  Here's a new one for him.

I must have left the doors open when I was getting stuff out to ready the guest room, and Dexter took advantage.  Life with Dexter is never boring!

We could not find Dexter one night, not that we were looking that closely, and went to close the front room windows for the evening.  And found...

One night, or shall I start "It was a dark and stormy night...the heroine knew, by the hair standing up on the nape of her slender neck, that something was amiss...but where??  DUNH DUNH DUNH  In the bedroom the knight was there, glistening with sweat, as the stared down the chest of drawers.  Her hero bellowed at the evil drawers 'I shall prevail...I WILL rid you of excess tshirts and socks"

As Art had the drawers pulled out to downsize his tshirt collection, Dexter made himself at home.  He must have some 6th sense of when peculiar space is available for sleeping.

Dexter won that round, and the drawer stayed on the floor for the night, only be replaced in the morning.

As has been mentioned before, Dexter likes to sleep in crazy places.  Here are a few:

Here is Dexter, his favorite nap spot taken, just going with the flow and fitting in where he can. That pretty much sums up his life - fitting in, around the boys, where and when he can. He takes his moments when he is able to.

Dexter is forever trying to get into boxes that are much too small for him. He still thinks he is a tiny kitten. Generally we just laugh at him. This time however, he got the last laugh. He was trying to get in the box and we kept saying "no way Dex, you'll never fit". He showed us. No matter that the box is bowing out...he did fit. Must not have been too comfortable though, since he never got back in there. Proving a point. Point Dexter. Still, he can be super cute when he isn't biting me.

Dexter is really cute when he's asleep. Two of his favorite places to sleep are in Wyatt's crib (or 'big bed' as Zach calls it) and on the changing pad.






We also discovered a new favorite sleeping place for Dexter - in the stroller!


We have caught him here a few times, while the stroller was in the closet! I'm not sure why his fav sleeping places have to do w/ the boys' stuff.

That Crazy Cat

One day I could not find Dexter. I was pretty sure he was in the house, since it was raining outside, but where was he hiding?? Not on the changing pad, where he likes to sleep. Not on the end of my bed. Not in our closet, hiding in the paper bag. Not stretched out on our 'cuddly chair'. As I was walking back to the playroom/guest room, I caught a glimpse of him out of the corner of my eye. He was sacked out in Zach's portable high chair. So odd. Zach found him later and yelled "Khaki, NO! Khaki so FUNNY". Cute, IMHO.

Sept 27: Happy Birthday Dexter

Dexter is now officially in his "terrible twos". His birthday (or so we decided, since we knew he was born in Sept., and we adopted him on the 27th of Jan) was today, September 27th. To celebrate, Dexter got to spend as much time as he wanted to outside, and got lots and lots of treats. One treat that was not planned was him helping himself to the leftover chicken that I had not yet put away! I was trying to get a shot of him w/ the container stuck on his head, but by the time I grabbed the camera, he had figured out how to use his paw to get the remaining chicken and the container was no longer stuck on his head. boo.

Dexter's New Life

Dexter has a new lifestyle here in Dusseldorf. He is now an inside-outside cat. It all started back in July when Art's parents were here. It was SO HOT that we could no longer get away with just tilting the windows open at the top, and had to throw them all the way open so as to entice a breeze here and there. Windows here in Europe generally do not come with screens, so Dexter had full access to leave the apartment, which he did. After a few days of trying to see how this would work, we have developed a sort of routine for Dexi. He gets to go out in the morning, come back in an hour or so later for breakfast (when Art leaves for work - otherwise Dex follows Art), then out again for a few hours, and back inside for a nap. If we leave the house for an extended time, Dex has to come back into the house, because he has taken to following us wherever we go. We thought it was very cute when he started following us the 100 yards to our local market, but then it became less funny when he started following us INTO the market. Imagine if you can, me trying to wrangle a toddler and a cat in a grocery store. Once I put Dexter into the grocery cart w/ Zach, which worked great until Dex jumped out and into the cake asile shelves. Sigh. Alas, he is not allowed to go into the store with us anymore...though Mohammed and the whole clan think it is hilarious. I was in the store w/ Zac when I heard Mohammed say "there is Zachary's katze".
The funniest part of Dexter's new life is that occasionally he meows to come back in the house, and I am either in my jammies still and don't want to come open the door for him, or he is in the back yard area. In these instances, we have developed a hilarious way of getting Dexter back into the house. We lower our canvas COUNTS bag (again Joanna, what a great Christmas gift) out the window or over the balcony, Dexter jumps in, and we pull him up. We had to use treats to convince him that this is a good idea at first, but now he happily jumps into the bag and allows us to pull him up. Very funny.
Dexter is now a much nicer cat, and rarely aggressive. He likes his freedom, and life could only be better if he had a cat door so he could come and go as he pleases. When we move back to the States, we will have to try and work that out for him. We have had suggestions of putting a long 2x4 out the balcony for him to climb up and down, but we have not yet persued that.
Part of Dexter's new life is apparently getting stuck in a tree. He did come down on his own though, however it was NOT graceful.
I do miss having Dexter in the house during the day, but he is a happier cat for it. And still sleeps with/on me at night. I have to save room for him next to my pillow otherwise he licks me to get me to move over.
Another cute picture is when we caught Dexter in Zach's crib for the first time. We have not seen it since that one time. So odd.

Dexter is definitely a "man" cat, meaning he seems to have a lot more love for males than females. Even while Liz and Jerod were here, Dexter would get cuddly with Jerod. So here are some picts of Dexter loving on Art, which is a daily occurance. I also get some loving, but not quite as forceful.
